Today

Today I saw a rainbow.
Raw beauty of nature,
Distinct evidence of life,
Reminders of happiness

Today I hear people say
"There's nothing to see in Singapore"
"There's nothing to look forward in life"
"I can't do anything about the situation now"

Today I watched the sun set
Pure greetings from heaven
Basking glory from the cosmos
A usual sight,
But one still not fully appreciated.

Today I see people walking
Walking aimlessly
Walking unconsciously
Some so busy that they can't even walk at all

Today I heard the birds cry
Perfect symphonies of tranquility
Emblems of freedom and hope
Wonderful creations of life

Today I thought to myself

People are truly seeking happiness
People are truly seeking acceptance
People are truly seeking meaning

But why, then

Do they ignore the simple signs of life
Do they accept the cruel face of society
Do they conform to the shape society deems as "Perfect"

If people refuse to even look at the smallest things we have

Then what else can we look at?

So what if it has been discovered
So what if it is always there
So what if it will wait for you

When you don't stop to smell the roses
Sooner or later you'll forget the scent of it

When you don't even try to change
When you don't even try to think positive
When you don't even try to appreciate

How then, can you find happiness?

Today I saw an executive on the way home
She was busy talking on her phone
Busy arguing and planning with her colleagues
Busy trying to clench deals and make profit

Today I saw an old man at the void deck
He was just staring at the sunset
Watching the mothers feed their children
Staring at cars flashing by

But on his face played a smile

And there I think he found happiness

And there I think I found mine
